Read Psalm 4

In Psalm 4:8, David writes: 'In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.'

Reflection

Night has its own way of amplifying what went unresolved. The conversation that went badly, the bill waiting for tomorrow, the worry about someone we love — everything seems bigger when the house goes quiet. David knew that feeling, and yet he wrote that he could lie down in peace.

His secret was not a problem-free life, but a surrender: 'you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.' Sleeping in peace is not pretending the day was perfect. It is acknowledging what happened, giving thanks for what was good, asking forgiveness for what failed, and entrusting to God what remained pending.

Evening prayer is a closing, like locking the front door before bed. You revisit the day without judging yourself, hand over what you cannot solve, and rest. Sleep, in that sense, is an act of faith: admitting the world keeps turning while you rest, because God does not sleep.

If your mind insists on replaying worries, return to the verse and repeat it slowly: 'In peace I will lie down and sleep.' Breathe deeply, give thanks for three things from the day, and leave tomorrow to tomorrow.

One action for today

Before sleeping, take three simple steps: give thanks for something good in the day, ask forgiveness for something that failed, and hand God one worry about tomorrow. Then turn off the light without reaching for your phone.

A question to consider

What was left pending today that I can hand over to God before sleeping?

Prayer

Lord, the day is ending and I place in your hands everything that happened: what was good, what hurt, and what remains unanswered. Forgive my failures; thank you for your care in every hour. Calm my heart, keep away the thoughts that steal my rest, and watch over my home and my family through the night. In peace I lie down, because you alone make me dwell in safety. In Jesus' name, amen.

Why pray before sleeping?

Evening prayer is an ancient habit of the Christian faith: a moment to close the day with gratitude, repentance and surrender. It helps settle the heart before rest and remember that God cares for what we cannot control while we sleep.
