Few things weigh on the heart like family. A distant child, a marriage going through a hard season, a relative facing health problems — these are pains we often carry in silence, not knowing what to do. Praying for family is recognizing that we love people we cannot control.
Joshua's words — 'as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord' — were not a promise of a perfect family. They were a decision of direction: in that house, God would come first. Prayer for family begins there, asking God to dwell in the home before asking him to change the people.
Interceding for our loved ones also changes the one who prays. When we bring before God someone who has hurt us, the heart softens; when we give thanks for those nearby, patience grows. Prayer does not guarantee reconciliation or solve every conflict — but it opens space for love and truth to circulate in the home again.
If there is a serious situation in your family — violence, addiction, a marriage in crisis — also seek help: a pastor, a counselor, a professional. Praying is not folding your arms; it is asking for wisdom to act with love and courage.
One action for today
Write down the name of each person in your family. Beside each name, write a specific request — not just 'bless them', but something concrete: health, repentance, peace, direction. Pray for one name a day this week.
A question to consider
Who in my family can I pray for today, by name, with a concrete request?
Prayer
Lord, I bring my family before you. You know each person, each struggle and each need in this house. Pour out your peace over our relationships, heal what is wounded, protect those who are far away, and teach us to love one another with patience and truth. May our home be a place where you dwell. Care for each one according to your will. In Jesus' name, amen.
What does it mean to pray for your family?
It means interceding: bringing before God, by name, the people we love, with concrete requests and gratitude. Prayer for family is not a formula that obliges God to act our way, but an act of trust and love that also transforms the one who prays.
